Ballot issues
Proposal 2026-1: Call a constitutional convention
Shall a convention of elected delegates be convened in 2027 to draft a general revision of the State Constitution for presentation to the state’s voters for their approval or rejection?
Proposal 2026-2: Campaign contributions by utilities and government contractors, and political ad disclosure (initiated law)
The proposal would: • Prohibit regulated electric and gas utilities, contractors with over $250,000 annually in government contracts, and people and organizations with substantial connections to these utilities/contractors from making direct or indirect campaign contributions to those who run for or hold offices that impact them. • Expand laws regulating spending on political communications, including those requiring disclosing donor information, to apply to communications clearly identifying candidates or ballot questions, even if they do not expressly advocate voting for/against them. • Expressly apply the law requiring disclosure of who paid for political communications to internet political communications. Should this proposal be adopted?
Lake County: senior citizens services millage renewal
For purpose of reauthorizing funding for providing services to the senior citizens of Lake County through the Lake County Council on Aging, shall the previously voter authorized increase of the constitutional limitation imposed under Article IX, Sec. 6 of the Michigan Constitution upon the total amount of taxes which may be assessed in one (1) year upon all taxable property within the County of Lake, Michigan, and that has been reduced by the Headlee Amendment to .6150, be renewed in an amount not to exceed .6150 mills ($.6150 per $1,000.00 of taxable value) and the County authorized to levy this millage for a period of six (6) years (2027-2032) inclusive? (If approved and levied in full, this millage will raise an estimated $539,026 for County senior citizen services in the first calendar year of the levy based on taxable value. In accordance with State law, a portion of the revenue collected may be disbursed to the Village of Baldwin Downtown Development Authority).
Lake County: sheriff road patrol millage renewal
For the sole purpose of continued funding of the operation of the County Sheriff’s Department Road Patrol, shall the previously voter authorized increase of the constitutional limitation imposed under Article IX, Sec. 6 of the Michigan Constitution upon the total amount of taxes which may be assessed in one (1) year upon all taxable property within the County of Lake, Michigan, and that has been reduced by the Headlee Amendment to 2.8362, be renewed in an amount not to exceed 2.8362 mills ($2.8362 per $1,000.00 of taxable value) and the County authorized to levy this millage for a period of six (6) years (2027-2032) inclusive? (If approved and levied in full, this millage will raise an estimated $2,485,829 for Road Patrol purposes in the first calendar year of the levy based on taxable value. In accordance with State law, a portion of the revenue collected may be disbursed to the Village of Baldwin Downtown Development Authority).
Sweetwater Township: emergency services millage (new)
For the purposes of providing funding for Emergency Services, including providing funding for the fire services, first responders, and other emergency service operations and any related equipment, shall the limitation on the amount of taxes which may be assessed each year for all purposes on real and tangible personal property in Sweetwater Township, Lake County, Michigan be increased as provided in Article 9, Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution and Sweetwater Township be authorized to levy a new and additional tax not to exceed one mill ($1.00 per $1,000) of state equalized valuation of such property for a period of fourteen (14) years (2027-2040) inclusive? If approved, this millage would supplement an existing and currently approved Fire Services levy. If approved and levied in full, this millage will raise an estimated $22,956 for Emergency Services in the first calendar year of the levy based on taxable value.
Mason County Eastern District: operating millage restoration (non-homestead)
This proposal will allow the school district to continue to levy the statutory rate of not to exceed 18 mills on all property, except principal residence and other property exempted by law. The school district is required to levy 18 mills for operating purposes to receive its full revenue per pupil foundation allowance. Shall the limitation on the amount of taxes which may be assessed against all property, except principal residence and other property exempted by law, in Mason County Eastern District, Mason, Lake and Manistee Counties, Michigan, be increased by 6 mills ($6.00 on each $1,000 of taxable valuation) for a period of 8 years, 2026 to 2033, inclusive, to provide funds for operating purposes; the estimate of the revenue the school district will collect if the millage is approved and 0.1474 mill of the 6 mills is levied in 2026 is approximately $19,378 (this millage is to restore millage lost as a result of the reduction required by the Michigan Constitution of 1963 and will be levied only to the extent necessary to restore that reduction)?
