The question, as printed on the ballot

Shall the Mississinewa Community School Corporation increase property taxes paid to the school corporation for no more than eight (8) years for the purpose of funding the Putting Our Kids First Initiative, funding investments in student transportation, school security upgrades, and the competitive compensation needed to recruit and retain teachers and staff, by imposing a property tax rate that does not exceed $0.4950 per $100 of assessed value and results in a maximum annual amount that does not exceed $2,000,000? If this operating referendum public question is approved by the voters, for a median residence of $150,000, the property's annual property tax bill would increase by $294 per year.

A “Yes” vote means

Allows Mississinewa schools to levy up to $0.495 per $100 of assessed value (at most $2 million a year) for eight years, for busing, school security upgrades and teacher and staff pay.

A “No” vote means

No referendum tax is levied; the district says it would have to cancel a large part of its bus routes and could cut teachers, programs and building maintenance.

Official plain English statement

Mississinewa Community School Corporation asks voters to approve a new operating referendum property tax of up to $0.495 per $100 of assessed value, raising no more than $2 million a year for eight years. The district's spending plan puts about $1 million a year toward student transportation, $500,000 toward school security upgrades and $500,000 toward retaining teachers and staff.

On the ballot as "MISSISSINEWA COMMUNITY SCHOOL CORPORATION OPERATING REFERENDUM" (Local Public Question), for voters in the Mississinewa district (Grant County). The district says the referendum is not about adding new programs or buildings, and that SEA 1 and Gas City's tax increment financing districts have cut its operations fund revenue.
