The question, as printed on the ballot
Shall the Metropolitan School District of Wayne Township increase property taxes paid to the school district for no more than eight (8) years for the purpose of funding the Wayne Forward Initiative to sustain educational and operational stability in response to reductions in property tax revenue, including recruiting and retaining classroom teachers, funding student safety and school security, and maintaining daily educational operations by imposing a property tax rate that does not exceed $0.70 and results in a maximum annual amount that does not exceed $41,019,552. If this operating referendum public question is approved by the voters, for a median residence of $200,000, the property's annual property tax bill would increase by $605 per year. The most recent operating referendum public question proposed by the school district was held in 2019 and passed.
A “Yes” vote means
Approves Wayne Township schools' operating tax of up to $0.70 per $100 of assessed value (up to $41.0 million a year) for up to eight years; the district says it replaces its 2019 levy.
A “No” vote means
No new referendum tax is levied; the district's 2019 referendum tax of $0.35 per $100 of assessed value continues until it expires in 2027.
Official plain English statement
MSD of Wayne Township asks voters to approve an operating referendum tax of up to $0.70 per $100 of assessed value (up to about $41 million a year) for up to eight years for its Wayne Forward Initiative: recruiting and retaining teachers, school safety and security, and daily operations. The district says it would replace its 2019 referendum tax of $0.35, which expires in 2027, and that it plans to levy $0.60 in the first year, about $199 a year more than now for a $200,000 home; the ballot's $605 estimate assumes the full $0.70 and no existing referendum.
On the ballot as "MSD OF WAYNE TOWNSHIP REFERENDUM" (Local Public Question), for voters in the MSD of Wayne Township. The district says the ballot language does not mention that the new levy replaces the 2019 referendum ($0.35, expiring in 2027) and that the $605 figure assumes no existing referendum and the $0.70 maximum.
