Election
Nov 3, 2026

The question, as printed on the ballot

Shall the City of Elizabeth amend its Chapter 5.70.60 Municipal Code on Increases in Base Rent to add a $20 annual rent cap so that no landlord shall request or receive any increase in base rent in excess of three percent or twenty dollars, whichever is less, over the base rent received for the twelve (12) months prior?

A “Yes” vote means

Elizabeth's rent control ordinance limits yearly base-rent increases to 3% or $20, whichever is less.

A “No” vote means

Elizabeth's rent control ordinance stays as it is now, without the $20 annual cap.

Official plain English statement

This amendment to the ordinance returns an annual dollar cap on annual rent increases that the City of Elizabeth had in its rent control ordinance in 2022 until the council amended the ordinance. A “Yes” vote is a vote to approve returning the annual dollar increase cap to twenty dollars. A “No” vote is a vote to leave the rent control ordinance as is, unamended.

On every Elizabeth ballot (sample ballot forms 7-12). Interpretive statement as printed on the sample ballot.
