The question, as printed on the ballot

The Board of Commissioners of the Pierce County Public Transportation Benefit Area, commonly known as Pierce Transit, adopted Resolution No. 2026-006 concerning a sales and use tax for local transportation services. This proposition would authorize the collection of an additional sales and use tax of three-tenths of one percent, or three pennies for every $10 spent, to maintain and improve transit service, including adding bus routes and special event service; expanding daytime, evening, and weekend service; reducing wait times between buses; improving access to light rail, healthcare, schools, and jobs; expanding service for people with disabilities; and providing fare-free bus service to seniors and youth, effective April 1, 2027. Shall this proposition be:

A “Yes” vote means

Pierce Transit may collect an added 0.3% sales and use tax (3 cents per $10) from April 1, 2027, to maintain and expand bus service and provide fare-free rides for seniors and youth.

A “No” vote means

No added transit sales tax is collected; Pierce Transit says it would begin planning service reductions.

Official plain English statement

This proposition, if passed, would provide exclusive, direct support for Pierce County bus and transit services by authorizing an additional 3/10th of 1% (0.3%) sales and use tax, equivalent to 3 cents on a $10 taxable purchase. The proposition would fund the preservation and expansion of transportation services throughout Pierce Transit's service area. Planned improvements would reduce wait times and improve access to schools, healthcare, shopping, job centers, light rail, and community events by adding new bus routes, increasing how frequently buses arrive, and expanding evening and weekend bus service. Funding would also support services for people with disabilities, commuter vanpools connecting employees to work, and partnerships to help students travel safely. Additional funding would support seasonal and special event services to destinations like fairs, festivals, sports events, and waterfront access. The funding would also support fare-free bus service for seniors and continued free transit for youth. Pierce Transit is operating at the maximum level current funding allows and despite rising costs has not received a sales tax rate increase since 2002. Sales tax revenues account for approximately 80% of the operating budget. If rejected, Pierce Transit would begin planning service reductions due to rising costs.
