What this office does: The court of appeals hears civil and criminal appeals from the district and county courts in its district (except death-penalty cases); justices are elected to six-year terms.

Justices of the 9th Court of Appeals are elected by voters in Hardin, Jasper, Jefferson, Liberty, Montgomery, Newton, Orange, Polk, San Jacinto and Tyler counties.
