Watterson has spent most of his career as a La Porte County deputy prosecutor, including three years as chief deputy under Prosecutor Sean Fagan, plus three years as a defense attorney and public defender; he defeated Fagan in the Republican primary. He was president of the La Porte County Election Board for three years after his 2020 appointment.
