Background for Kandie D. Smith

State senator for District 5 (Edgecombe and Pitt counties) since 2023, after two terms in the N.C. House; she chairs the N.C. Legislative Black Caucus. She was first elected to the Greenville City Council in 2009 and became the city's first Black woman mayor.
