Senate Democratic leader since December 2024, the first woman and first Black woman to hold the post; she has represented District 17 (Wake County) since January 2021, when she was appointed to fill a vacancy, after one term in the N.C. House. A family and child-welfare attorney and social worker, she co-founded the law firm Batch, Poore & Williams.
